Description

A love affair though photos focus of new exhibit

A chance meeting between two stars – one rising and one well established - on the world art scene that resulted in a love affair will be the focus of a unique exhibit opening Saturday, Sept. 24, at the award-winning Fullerton Museum Center.

“Frida Kahlo:  Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray” will spotlight the often tempestuous and always colorful celebrated Mexican artist Kahlo as depicted in photos taken by Muray through the course of their affair.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 6-9 p.m. on the 24th, and will feature tours of the exhibit, a curator’s talk, refreshments and live entertainment.

In May 1931, Muray traveled to Mexico on vacation and met Kahlo, an artist well known and much loved by her countrymen.  Not surprisingly, Muray, renowned for his pioneering work in color portrait photography, began photographing Kahlo.  Those images, on display in the exhibit, reveal not only the work of a master photographer, but the passion of an extraordinary love story.

Although Muray’s love affair with Kahlo, who was married to famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera at that time, ended after 10 years, they remained friends for the rest of their lives.

The exhibit is courtesy of the Nickolas Muray Archives and Tour Development by Smith Kramer Fine Art Services of Kansas City, Missouri.

Persons requiring special accommodations to view the exhibit or attend the exhibit preview are asked to notify the center staff prior to coming to the Fullerton Museum Center.
