COPH Night at the Library

For many people, some of the fondest memories of childhood are those when parents and grandparents would tell stories about family history.

The importance of such histories to our understanding as a community of where we are and where we are going will be the focus of a special program to be presented Wednesday, Oct. 5, by the Fullerton Public Library in conjunction with its annual month-long “Fullerton Reads” program.

Representatives of the Center for Oral and Public History (COPH) at California State University, Fullerton, will be on hand to discuss the center’s program, projects and some of their most recent historic exhibitions. 

“By examining the work of the COPH, we will see the power of oral and public history,” said Maureen Gebelein.
The program, which is free to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Fullerton Main Library, 353 W. Commonwealth Ave., adjacent to Fullerton City Hall.

The “Fullerton Reads” program, previously known as “One Book, One Community,” was developed by the American Library Association as a means of fostering civic unity through everyone reading the same book. 

The theme for this year’s observance is “All history is local,” and the book selected as the focus of the program is “Orange County:  A Personal History” by Gustavo Arellano, managing editor of the “Orange County Weekly” and author of the newspaper column “Ask a Mexican.”

Arellano’s autobiographical book documents his life growing up as a person of Mexican heritage in what was then predominantly a “white” Orange County.
